3 out of 5 stars She breaks the dawn and breaks the rules!   March 9, 2009
Mikeisha Best (Mitchellville, Maryland United States)
Michelle was always the backdrop of Destiny's Child. She was usually given the bridges and the bridges only to sing. I never really liked her voice; I always thought that it was raspy and weird, but after listening to her sophomore LP, "Unexpected", I have discovered that her vocals aren't bad at all; she just doesn't sound right with Beyonce' and Kelly. When she is on a track alone, her voice is somehow different and better. I'm glad I listened to her album. What drove me to listen to it was the first single, "We Break the Dawn." I heard it and fell in love. I immediately came to the conclusion that it was one of the best singles of 2008. It was different, but still had that great, classic R&B sound that I adore.

The tone of "Unexpected" is a blissful one. Sure, there are songs which speak on heartbreak and loss of love, but she doesn't sing them in a somber fashion. There are lots of influences of the techno sound. I commend her for stepping outside of the box in more ways than one. In fact, there is only one song here that sounds like it should have been given to her group, Destiny's Child, "Thank U". Michelle is thanking a former lover for doing her wrong, because in the end, she prevailed because of the experiences. The only true highlight of the album is "The Break of Dawn", but there are many tracks worth listening to like "Lucky Girl" and "Too Young for Love." "Hello Heartbreak" is influenced heavily by the techno sound, but it's one of the weaker moments. The techno sound really doesn't work for Michelle.

Michelle did a nice job. I like it. It's decent music, and sometimes even partially groundbreaking.

Mikeisha's Top 5

1."We Break the Dawn"
2."Thank U"
3."Stop this Car"
4."Unexpected Intro"
5."Hungover"

1 out of 5 stars I thought this CD sucked.   February 25, 2009

It almost seems like she's getting the left over material from Beyonce and Kelly. I thought we break the Dawn was awful. I mean seriously? She could have done alot better. I remember, the rest of the tracks on this album were just as bad as well. i can see why BET did not want to play her videos. She can really sing(saw her on broadway), but this seemed like a C-rated version of Lady Gaga.

Wow...I've always thought that there was no competition for Beyonce; I'm not a big fan of Kelly Rowland, and Michelle had yet to deviate from her gospel roots, but the results of her pop/R&B oriented music is AMAZING. I saw her album one day on iTunes and thought, Hmmm I haven't heard much from her before, lets give her a go. So I sampled all the tracks and immediately fell in love so I ordered it from Amazon so I could play it on my stereo. They are ALL my favorites; I can't pick one song. You will be so stoked when you receive this album, and if you're not sure--just DO IT, you'll love it. The songs that will entice you will be, without a doubt, Hello Heartbreak, Unexpected, We Break the Dawn, Too Young for Love, The Greatest, Lucky Girl and Hungover--then you will just naturally fall in love with the rest of the album. Next time Michelle-MORE songs. Beyonce, be afraid cuz Michelle's next album is gonna take it to another level!

As everyone is well aware of Destiny's Child was the most successful female group worldwide and for that three performers should have easily grab the spotlight with their solo careers. Though unfortunately Beyonce seems to be taking up the storm. Don't get me wrong she's great and I enjoy her music but she seems to be overbearing to the other two Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. But now Michelle has released her album and my words are lost. I don't think Beyonce could pull a record like this on her own. The majority of tracks seem to make me dance, while the slow ones call "intermission" for me to sit down. The CD to me seems a bit underrated for some reason and didn't seem to get the promotion it deserved. But Michelle has been on youtube promoting herself which I give credit to. "We break the dawn" and "The greatest" were the first singles followed by "Hello Heartbreaker" (which was made for the club scene) but I do feel "Lucky girl" would have had a better chance of topping all charts because it got points across, sent a positive message, and the best part was you could dance to it. Overall this album is my fave of the year so far 10/10
